3.    Tholos.   Simpson [1981], 171    'A small built tomb of the tholos type ... was found in rough ground a short distance to north of Anavra, ...'
4.    Tomb.   Wace and Thompson [1912], 208    ' ... and a tholos tomb has been found at Ghura. Some doubt has been thrown on this tomb but we have examined the site, and tried to find out what it contained. The tomb is now a lime-kiln, 2.70 m. high and 3.55 m. wide in its present state. Some peasants were digging to make a lime-kiln, and found a walled-up door, which they opened. Finding a round space within, well suited for a lime-kiln, they cleared it and utilised it as such. In so doing they found some broken pots, now lost, some conical steatite whorls, and a pair of bronze tweezers, which are now in the Museum at Almiros.'

NOTES

1. Placement is notional. Wace and Thompson (208) say that this tomb '...has been found at Ghura.' The marker has been placed on the Vouna Ghouras which are the northern hills leading up to Othrys. This agrees with the constraint that the tomb should be a short distance north of Anavra.

2. The town of 'Goura' was renamed 'Anavra' on July 19, 1928. See this.
