GENERAL SITE TYPE Chamber Tomb

TYPE

1.    Chamber Tomb.   Simpson [1981], 196    Simpson doesn't quite say this but that is the implication. He says: '.some rock chambers filled with brush were observed in 1970, on lower slopes about 400 km. (sic) to northeast of Kastraki (F2005, rhc), and near these were some small worn sherds, including a fragment of a LH IIIB deep bowl handle.'

NOTE

1. Maiuri [1923] 252, (under the heading 'Liro'), reported some chamber tombs with dromoi in the hills on the E side of the bay. : 'Sulle altura ad oriente della Baia di Longonia sono visibili numerose tombe precedute da dromos le quali sarebbero state manomesse dall gente del luogo: sul terreno restano copiosi frammenti di ceramica micenea e geometrica...' Simpson [1981] says of these tombs 'Copious Mycenaean, Geometric, and Classical sherds were said to have been found in the vicinity of chamber tombs on the hills to the north-east, on the east side of the bay. No signs now remain of the dromoi reported, but some rock chambers filled with brush were observed in 1970, on the lower slopes about 400 km. (sic, Simpson clearly means 'm') to northeast of Kastraki, and near these were some small worn sherds, ...'. I have identified Simpson's 'Kastraki' with C5249. I believe that Simpson wants us to assume that the 1970 rock chambers are the same as Maiuri's 'numerose tombe'.
