NOTES
1. The region of Kambi or Kambos (F1345) is to the SE of the town of Diafani/Yiafani (F5350). It begins on the N by the Church of Hagios Nikolaos (F4369) and it extends to the SE about 3/4 of a kilometer. Included in this area are two ridges which run roughly NS. The easternmost of these ends in a thin promontory about 35 m wide at the end. Between the two ridges is a relatively fertile plain, 100 to 250 m wide, and now planted with olives. The easternmost of the two ridges is bordered on its western edge by a reuma or gully. The western ridge is terraced, at least in its northern part. Simpson and Lazenby [1962] 161 supposed that these terraces were a plausible origin for seven Mycenaean vases from a tomb and was, possibly, the location of a settlement. As they say, 'The site conforms in general with the rather vague description of the place where the Mycenaean vases were found; and there seems to be no other possible place for an ancient settlement in this vicinity.' This idea is repeated in Simpson and Lazenby [1973] 173 and in Simpson [1981] 199-200. Melas [1985] 43-4 says 'Seven vases and a bronze sword, ..., were probably found in a tomb at Kambi, some five hundred metres south-east of the village Diafani ... ' and (p. 44) 'The extensive terraces at Kambi are reasonably fertile and form a broad promontory at the end of a long ridge which runs steeply down from the west and is bounded by ravines and thick pine-woods. Immediately to the north-west, beyond a dry stream bed, the terraced hill of Palaia is situated, very appropriate for Minoan occupation. We thus are tempted to believe that the objects mentioned above came from this place, where a Late Minoan chamber tomb had probably been cut into the hill-slope. On the other hand the whole vases point indeed to the existence of a cemetery.'
2. Simpson and Dickinson [1979] 358 remark that "The mixture of LM and LH is interesting on this island mid-way between Crete and Rhodes."
