NOTES

1. Stubbings in his article 'The Mycenaean Pottery of Attica', BSA (42), [1947], p. 4, says "In the low-lying country south of Athens, between Hymettos and the sea, there must have been several fairly important Mycenaean cemeteries, and another near Vari; but these unfortunately were discovered by local inhabitants in and about 1881 and excavated in the interests of antique dealers. Consequently any exact information about the finds is lost." The significant hill to the NE of this point is Lathouriza; that to the SW is Kamini. This is a large 'Archaeological Area' which extends to both sides of the road. The area specifically mentioned by Simpson would be on the SW (Kamini) side of the road. Privitera [2013] is describing the Lathouriza side when he says "una di esse (chamber tombs, RHC) ..., posta sul versante sud della collina di Lathouriza a ovest di Vari... " and the Kamini side when he says "La seconda tomba si trovava a sud-est della prima, in localita Kamini; ..." Privitera concludes thus: "Sulla base della ceramica pubblicata, si può concludere che a Varkiza, ..., siamo in presenza di una necropoli utilizzata per un lungo periodo, compreso tra il TE IIIB e il TE IIIC early." He suggests that the settlement associated with these cemeteries may be found on the Kamini Hill itself.

2. In the BCH [1954] 110 we are told of the discovery of: ' ... nombreux vases, dont un rhyton décoré de poissons d'un réalisme étonnant.'
