1.    Settlement.   Simpson [1965], 140    'It was here, rather than on the bare upper slopes of the Phrourin, that the Mycenaean settlement appears to have been located.'

NOTE

1. Marker placed by following Kase [1991], fig. 1-9. In its heyday Herakleia consisted of a fortress on a height (F2497) as well as a lowlands settlement. The lowlands portion was probably extensive and so the marker really indicates extent. Accepted opinion seems to place its nucleus as lying between the Asopos and the road from Bralo to Lamia just at the point where the Asopos gorge debouches into the Lamian plain. Simpson [1981] marks it (Map C, p. 58) as a significant settlement site but I do not see that three sherds constitutes evidence of this.
