GENERAL SITE TYPE Mound

TYPE

1.    Mound.   Messenia I, 240    'Ca. 150 m. S-W of the excavated tholoi and slightly west of the route to Myrsinochori, in a field owned by Theodoros Giannokopoulos.'
2.    Tumulus.   BCH [1954], 124    'Sur cette même crête, trois tumulus, ... '
3.    Tumulus.   Zavadil [2012], 531    'W. A. McDonald und R. Hope Simpson entdeckten etwa 150 m südwestlich der Tholosgräber und leicht westlich der Straße nach Myrsinochori im Feld von Th. Giannokopoulos an der Spitze eines Hügelkammes eine weitere Anhöhe, die sie als Tumulus interpretierten.'

NOTES

1. The excavated tholoi mentioned in Messenia I are at C323.

2. P. Courbin's report in BCH (78) 1954, 124 reads as follows:

"Quelques sondages nouveaux ont été faits à 1 h. 30 de marche de Chora, sur la crête « Routsi », où une tholos était connue pour avoir été pillée à plusieurs reprises. Sur cette même crête, trois tumulus, distants de 200 ou 300 mètres, ne cachaient pas des tholoi, mais des pithoi funéraires ou des tombes à ciste en plaques de pierre. Les trouvailles ont été très rares et très pauvres, et semblent indiquer qu'il s'agit de tombes mycéniennes récentes ou submycéniennes (?)."

"Some new trial excavations were made at one and a half hours walk from Chora on the crest called 'Routsi', where a tholos was known to have been pillaged on numerous occasions. On this same crest, three tumuli, separated from each other by two or three-hundred meters concealed, not tholoi, but funerary pithoi or cist tombs with slabs of stone. The finds were scarce and very poor and the indications were that they were tombs of the Late Mycenaean or Sub Mycenaean (?)."
