TYPE

PERIOD (High Chronology)

1. Archaic: (700 BC - 480 BC)
    a.    Myers et al. [1992]: 251, 'A, C, and later Fortification walls around summit and low slopes, surviving chiefly to the north, northwest, and southeast.'

NOTES

1.  The city is Classical and so outside the scope of this Atlas but the acropolis walls appear to date back to the Archaic and so I have included them.

2.  Lauffer [1999] 559 (s.v. Polyrrhenia) describes it as the earliest Doric settlement in Crete: ' ... war die älteste Siedlung der Dorier auf Kreta und reicht in ihren Anfängen ins 8. Jh. v. Chr. zurück.' And for another account see the Princeton Encyclopaedia of Classical Sites (Stillwell et al. [1976] under 'POLYRRHENIA').
