TYPE

2.    Artifacts.   Davaras [2010], 77    'They comprise 41 human figurines, sometimes independent body parts; about 39 bovines, all mostly in small or miniscule fragments, likewise sometimes seemingly independent body parts; a few other animals,82 including some cervids, one or two birds, three dogs, perhaps one pig; as well as, a few other pieces which comprise some rudimentary doubtful phalli (?); and two multiple, cup or rather kernos-like vases.'

NOTES

1. Davaras tells us (Davaras [2010] 79) that Faure believed this site to have been a peak sanctuary but F. doesn't quite say that (Faure [1967] 122). F. merely says that the 'we are forced [to have the cult begin] in middle of the Bronze Age'. It is difficult to translate this extremely elliptical phrase without adding a little something; literally Faure says something like 'we are forced to start the cult in the middle of the Bronze Age' (' ..., qu'on est contraint de faire commencer le culte au milieu de l'age du bronze.') which doesn't quite make sense in English. We could better capture the sense with some work-around: '... we are forced to relegate the origins of the cult to the middle of the Bronze Age'. Nonetheless, and however it's translated, F. here does not communicate the idea that he thought this was a genuine peak sanctuary.
