GENERAL SITE TYPE Mine
TYPE
1. Mine. Gale and Stos-Gale [1981], 202 'Silver-mining on Siphnos was also practised in the Late Archaic period, as was mentioned by Herodotus and is now confirmed for ..., Vorini, ... 'PERIOD (High Chronology)
1. Early Cycladic: (3200 BC - 1850 BC)
a. Gale and Stos-Gale [1981]: , Gale and Stos-Gale discuss lead and other ore extraction at Vorini and several other sites on the island. They date this to ECI-II but this is based on their analysis of Hagios Sostis which they extend to the other mining sites including Vorini.
2. Archaic: (700 BC - 480 BC)
a. Gale and Stos-Gale [1981]: 202, 'Silver-mining on Siphnos was also practised in the Late Archaic period, ... '
NOTE
1. Most other ancient mines on Siphnos have been extensively damaged/destroyed by modern iron mining. Vorini is no exception. Gale and Stos-Gale [1981] suggest that their research at Hagios Sostis (C6907) is probably applicable to other mines on Siphnos. This implies that there was ECI - ECII ore extraction at Vorini.
In addition to EC activity there was renewed interest in precious metals extraction in the late Archaic. Of Vorini specifically they have this (p. 200) to say: 'Numerous ancient galleries are exposed in the extensive modern iron pits of Vorini ... . Some of the galleries are still filled with ancient waste walls and tool-marks are common. Above ground there are some ancient dumps of chipped-off rock and ore flakes with occasional sherds amongst which an oil lamp fragment was found. Obsidian flakes occur in the vicinity.
