1. RHC's translation of Graindor's narrative (pp. 309-10):

"At the south coast of the island in the district called Magganari, we have seen many tombs which had been opened by the peasants. They had a trapezoidal form of four sheets of schist forming the sides. Length, maximum, 1.4 m.; depth, average, 0.7 m. The orientations of the tombs were all different. There was nothing which one could properly term a 'necropolis', but just little groups of burials, and the investigations made among the tombs already opened were fruitless.

By their form, dimensions, and mode of construction these burials belong to the same series as some of those of Melos and Amorgos (BSA (111), 41, figs. 6, 7; Εφημ. ἀρχ., 1898, p. 142, figs. 2, 4). Their grave goods, partly preserved among the different inhabitants and partly by the demarchy, do not differ from those of other prehellenic tombs. There are some nude idols in Parian marble of a well developed type, and patera types in white marble, some having their handles pierced with suspension holes. We should mention above all a vase, also of white marble, in the form of a 'psychter' with four handles pierced with one or two holes."

2.  Schallin [1993] 8, table 1, defines 'LBA' as encompassing LCI and II.

3.  Simpson and Dickinson [1979] 342 remark that Manganari may be 'the cemetery referred to in BSA 3 (1896-7) 78.' which is being referred to here as BSA [1896].

4.  AR [1986] reports that this settlement is near 'Chalara Manganariou'. I have placed the marker by Cape Chalara and give an error radius of about 200 m.
