NOTES
1. Page numbers in Renfrew [2011] are, in actuality, location numbers in the electronic edition, ISBN 978-1-78570-773-5.
2. The position of this cemetery is described by Simpson and Dickinson [1979] as being 'in the neighbourhood of the emery mines'. There are a very large number of emery mines (about 250) in NE Naxos. Associated with these mines are the towns of Apiranthos (F6352), Danakos (F6353), Koronos (F6350), Keramoti (F6351), Messi/Mesi (F6348), and Skado (F6349). There is a particularly dense cluster of these mines outside Koronos at F6317. A useful website with some basic information is here.
This marker was placed by following the statement in Doumas [1977] 122-3, 'f. Avdheli'. "A white chapel in the area is called Panayia i Avdheliotissa (i.e. The Virgin Mary of Avdheli: Plate XXI g), ... Although on the slopes of the ravine, the soil is quite deep and probably was so in prehistoric times. Large terraces are retained partly by rock ledges and partly by walls. Olive trees cover the whole area, and they are probably responsible for its name (elaionas or elionas or even lionas means the olive grove; Plate Xl g—h). Opposite Avdheli, the right bank of the valley consists of the heights where emery mines are still working.
About 100 metres south-west from the chapel, on properties of Phrixos Kouphopoulos and Katinas Axaopoulos, an unknown number of prehistoric graves were plundered in spring 1961."
