GENERAL SITE TYPE  Settlement

TYPE

1.    Settlement.   Sfyroera [2018], 325    'Two other cities, named Nysa12 and Tragia,13 are known through literary sources alone; archaeological remains of these settlements have not yet been discovered.14'. In footnote 14 we read: 'If this holds true, Nysa could probably be connected with the also medieval Kalogeros castle at Apollonas'

2.    Settlement.   Billerbeck [2014], 397    Stephanus' Greek text on preceding page. BIllerbeck's translation: '83.

4.    Settlement.   Hansen and Nielsen [2004], 761    'Steph. Byz. claims that on Naxos there was a polis named Νύσα (479.9) ... '

PERIOD (High Chronology)

1. Roman: (753 BC - 395 AD)

    a.    Lambrinoudakis [2005]: 325, And earlier? From Lambrinoudakis [2005], p. 325, n. 12. He cites Aelius Herodianus (2nd c.) refering to Nysa on Naxos here: ' ... De prosodia catholica 3,1 266: 'Νῦσα πόλεις πολλαὶ, ... ἐν Νάξῳ, ...'

NOTE

1.  The general idea is that there was, during antiquity, a city on Naxos named Νύσα. Sfyroera [2018] has suggested, even though there is no archaeological evidence, that it could have been located where the Venetian castle of Kalogeros (Monk's) castle is now. The rest is just testimonies from Herodian and Steph. Byz. For full notices see Sfyroera [2011], p. 110, no. 150.
