NOTES

1.  Mermoz [2010] 65 suggests that this settlement may perhaps have been originally founded as a relay station for ships sailing between Euboea and the East and that it may have been destroyed by pirates; opinions which he attributes to K. Fagerström.  See his footnotes 4-6 on that page.
